Hospitals and Universities Have Complementary Strengths
The meeting began with opening remarks and introductions by the Vice Rector of UNTAR, followed by remarks from the CEO of RSSH. In his remarks, the CEO of RSSH expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome from UNTAR and emphasized the significant opportunities for collaboration between hospitals and institutions of higher education.
According to the President of RSSH, the university’s strength lies in its diverse fields of expertise and its experts, while the hospital offers services, clinical experience, facilities, and a wealth of data that can be leveraged for education and research. If these two strengths are combined, the collaboration can yield greater benefits—not only for both institutions but also for the community.
The Director of RSSH also shared reflections on various institutional visits that have been conducted. One key lesson learned concerns work culture. Strong competencies and technology must be accompanied by unity, cooperation, and a supportive organizational culture in order to achieve optimal performance.
RSSH itself has a history of more than a century in providing health care. This hospital, which operates under the Indonesian Ministry of Health, excels in mental health care and continues to transform into a more modern and high-performing hospital, while also expanding its range of health services.
In this transformation, collaboration with universities is considered highly strategic. RSSH provides opportunities for UNTAR students and faculty to participate in education, research, community service, and knowledge transfer. The goal is to ensure that innovations and research findings do not end with academic publications, but rather have a tangible impact on the quality of service.
Clinical Research Unit (CRU): A Gateway to Research Collaboration
Ns. Neng Esti Winahayu, M.Kep., Sp.Kep.J., as Head of the CRU, stated that the CRU has facilitated 122 research projects involving 33 institutions. The research process through the CRU can encompass stages ranging from initial observation, submission and processing of ethical clearance, data collection and analysis, to publication. The research ethics system has also been integrated with the KEPPKN’s SIM-EPK.
For UNTAR, these facilities open up opportunities to gain access to mental health research sites, conduct more structured research processes, improve research quality, engage in joint publications, and support the development and accreditation of academic programs. RSSH can serve as a partner for student research at the undergraduate thesis and graduate dissertation levels, including in the collection of research data through the CRU.
The Head of UNTAR’s LPPM, Dr. Hetty Tunjung Sari, noted that the most promising opportunities for collaboration lie within the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Psychology. This meeting demonstrated that UNTAR and Soeharto Heerdjan Hospital (RSSH) possess complementary resources. UNTAR brings academic strength and a multidisciplinary team of experts, while RSSH offers clinical experience, healthcare personnel, clinical facilities, a Clinical Research Unit (CRU), and a wealth of data for further development.
